Frank Ostini and Gray Hartley are not your typical garagistas. Although they started making wine together at home over 30 years ago, they had a plan in mind. Frank had this little restaurant in Buellton called the Hitching Post (a "Sideways" feature) and he thought he would make some wine exclusively for sale at the restaurant. So, in 1984, they used a local winery to make their HP wines but were making less than 1,000 cases total. Production grew to about 5,000 cases in 2001 and now exceeds 15,000 cases, utilizing grapes from some of the best vineyards in California's Central Coast. Both men agree that "great wines are made in the vineyard" and philosophically, they are only acting as caretakers, guiding the wine into the bottle. This style of winemaking allows each wine to reflect the character of the vineyard and that specific vintage. Tonight, we will have the opportunity to taste 4 of their outstanding wines including 3 different Pinots perfectly matched with the tantalizing cuisine of Chef Avinash Kapoor and his culinary team.
